Preparing for NYC and Staten Island Standardized Tests

The New York State Testing Program – with the acronym NYSTP – are administered by the New York State to students from third grade all the way to high school. Also known as the New York State Assessments, these standardized tests evaluate English language arts that include science, social studies, writing, and math.

Data from the test results are meant to help both teachers, parents, and students to understand and improve their academic performance. Additionally, the standardized test results help the New York State Testing Program to establish the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for each school that’s a requirement by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.

When it comes to testing preparation, parents play a very crucial role in ensuring their children are ready and excel in the standardized tests.

Role of Parents

When it comes to preparing for any NYSTP standardized test, include the Gifted and Talented tests (G&T), and the Catholic High Schools acceptance exams call the TACHS tests, the process begins with parents committing to their children’s education all year round. As a parent or guardian, devoting effort and time in helping your child learn goes a long way. This can be done by checking to see that the homework is done and that reading becomes an everyday habit for them.

Additionally, parents or guardians can hire academic tutors for their children or alternatively, enroll them in an online program that helps them build the fundamental skills needed. Books and test programs can be used to help the kids familiarize themselves with test-taking strategies, time restrictions, test formats and an overall practice plan for answering diverse types of questions.

While these tests are tough on students, they are also tough on parents as well. This means that parents, just like teachers or students, need to be prepared. Teachers have a role of updating the parents on their child’s progress so that they know how their kids are performing. Additional resources that parents can use are online programs as mentioned earlier.

Online Programs and Tutoring

There is never a shortcut to any test. Passing any test requires a strategy think, consistency in one’s studies as well as practice.

Relying on a set curriculum or certain teaching method may not give your children the results they want. However, with the added use of online programs, your kids can get study plans that are customized based on their needs, learning differences as well as strengths. This enables your kids to have a unique customized learning experience that has a 360 degree look into their study needs.

Tutoring is also another method that parents can opt for their kids. A Staten Island tutor, who is familiar with the NYC test structure, will cover every exam topic that your child needs to ensure they are well prepared for the exams. Additionally, they will also offer both emotional and psychological help to your child on how to deal with exams. This means developing a structure that your child can follow when faced with a tough or mind-boggling question.

Tutors, besides teachers, can help students prep better for their exams and have the ability to make them comfortable and ready to face their exams and pass.
