A Bit About Us

Skies the Limit Tutoring only hires the best, most highly-qualified, licensed and experienced Staten Island test preparation professionals. We know the steps to accomplish the student's academic goals.

What we do and how we do it:

Step 1: Pinpoint the students strengths and weaknesses for SHSAT subject matter.

Step 2: Prepare a customized Action Plan tailored to the student's specific needs.

We do NOT use a one-size-fits-all program, we only teach what the student needs to learn the most.

Step 3: We begin customized instruction using the latest technology

and proven teaching methods.  Tech includes:

-iPads

-computers

-paper and pencil.

Step 4: Provide a re-assessment and adjust the Action Plan as goals are met or exceeded.

This keeps the student's skills growing and improving at a swift and steady rate!

Our students are praised and rewarded for even their little accomplishments!

This positivity motivates students to work harder and reach higher goals.

We know our system works and we look forward to proving our winning system to you.

What You Need to Know about SHSAT Test Prep

The only criterion that is used to admit students to eight of the nine Specialized High Schools in New York is through the Specialized High School Admissions Tests (SHSAT). The test is only available to 8th-grade residents of New York City and is usually administered by the New York City Department of Education. Below are some tips that are useful when preparing for the test.

Make Use of SSAT and ISEE Practice Materials

SHSAT doesn’t have very many practice books available in the market, but parents can opt to get their kids the SSAT and ISEE books that they can use for practice. Although the format and types of questions are a bit different, the tests are mainly 8th-grade math which when combined with the SHSAT math, should give you a rough idea of what to expect in the test.

The Test Lacks Vocabulary Questions

While the test has words in the reading comprehension passages and questions, it’s important to know the meaning of the words. However, there are no antonyms, synonyms, sentence completions or any vocabulary-based questions. Have your child focus more on the math and reading rather than stress themselves memorizing words.

The Math Can be a Little Tricky

If you want to ace this test, it is important to use SAT materials besides the SHSAT books you have. SAT problems usually tend to have a component of a ‘brain teaser’ that in most cases, isn’t reflected on the math problems found in SHSAT books. If you have no clue about the hard ones, don’t sweat it. Instead, focus on the ones you are capable of handling or are similar to those found on SHSAT Board of Ed practice tests.

At Skies the Limit Tutoring Center it is our goal that our families know they made the best decision ever to put their children's academic success and self-esteem into our hands.
